About
Quilty Place began with one longarm machine, a woman who had been piecing quilts since her teens, and a passion.
At first I looked at quilts as a way to keep warm in winter. Then I learned it was a long process to go from fabric to block to top to quilt to binding. I gained a respect for the process. The longarm changed that process. It certainly made things easier and faster as far as completing quilts, but it also reinvented the way I looked at quilting.
I have quilted hundreds of quilts on my two longarm machines over the last 8 years. I have seen so many different quilts. Everything from first time quilts made by eager first timers to priceless heirlooms pieced by award-winning quilters. I have met quilters as different as the quilts they brought to me. Yet each quilt had its own story. As strange as it may sound, I listened, and the quilts would tell me what they needed to complete their story. My little long-arm business went from a hobby to a full time engagement in no time.
Recently, I recognized a need for quilts for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Not only do the quilts keep them warm at the chemo centers, but they also wrap them in comfort. Donations from customers, quilt guilds, and dedicated quilt shops have helped Quilty Place develop a donation program for Chemo Quilts. It is my way of giving back to our quilting community.
Quilty Place is now much more than a longarm service. It is a design studio, a catalog of kits, patterns, quilts, custom quilted quilts, and custom order availability.
Quilty Place continues to grow with the ever-changing quilting community and I’m loving every minute of it.
ABOUT JODY
What I would call my first successful sewing project was a beanbag made of denim. I had no pattern and certainly no instructor and although I was only 14, my vision of what I wanted compelled me to gather up pairs of old jeans, cut them up, and then piece squares and rectangles back together into a beanbag. That much-loved beanbag saw me and, later, my siblings through high school.
Years later, I was formally introduced to the art of quilting and fell in love. The idea that any number of fabrics could be combined to make colorful quilts was truly fascinating to me. I am still enchanted by color and how it comes together—especially in nature. Often, this is where I find inspiration for my designs—the world around me.
As a part of this love of color, and texture, I am a collector of all things unique, including fabric and thread. I use these collections of color and texture in and on the quilts you will find in my shop and in my gallery. They are functional collections, but to be honest, I also just love looking at the fabrics and threads, rearranging them, imagining patterns and designs.
Machine quilting changed my way of looking at quilts, and the longarm machine has taken that change to another level entirely. I love the versatility of quilting on my longarm. I love the computerized designs that enhance just about any quilt. The ability to adjust the computerized designs to fit in many of the blocks of the intricately pieced quilt tops allows me to fill spots with free-motion quilting and fits my style of quilting perfectly! And on top of that, there is free-motion quilting for those quilts that just speak to my heart. Those quilts just seem to be calling out for free-motion feathers and pebbles, or rulered lines and geometrical designs, providing one of the reasons quilting has become such a source of passion for me.
While longarm quilting has changed the way I look at quilting, it has only managed to further fuel my desire to share the joy of quilts with others. I opened a brick-and-mortar shop in 2017 and held weekly classes where I loved watching new quilters get excited about learning and then finishing up a quilt top. Although circumstances have changed and I no longer have the brick-and-mortar store, I still love being a part of the process for quilters of all skill levels. Now, I have an online presence and a private longarm studio and use those to continue my work.
I believe quilts and quilting will forever remain a part of our culture. I look forward to seeing where it takes all the quilters out there, including me.
